Never make the mistake of thinking that once the summer season ends so do the big events! In fact, Santa Fe is busy all year round and there is plenty to see and do if you want to visit in September.
The Santa Fe Thunder Half Marathon
Okay, we understand that not everyone wants to run a half marathon but you would be surprised just how many people come to the city just to see this event. This year will mark the events fourth year in existence and its popularity has grown rapidly thanks to the fact that this is not just a sporting event but also a cultural one. The race begins at Fort Marcy, an historical building. The course it follows takes in the Old Taos Highway, the Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino, views of both the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez mountains and runs through the Rio Grande Valley. Along the course the runners will hear live music.
However, if you do want to run and feel that a half marathon is not for you, you can take part in the 5k run or the 1 mile fitness walk instead. The event is organized by Global Running Culture and the proceeds are used to fund their various projects that promote sports. To find out more about the half marathon, which takes place on September 14th, visit the official website here.
The Santa Fe Renaissance Fair
The Santa Fe Renaissance Fair is one of the most popular cultural events on the local calendar. This year the event takes place on the 20th and 21st of September. The fair opens at 10 am on each day and ends at 6 pm. There is a small admission fee but children under 12 can go free, so this makes for a great family outing. You will get to see sword fighting and a variety of Celtic games in addition to finding out what life was like for residents of a Medieval village. You will also have the opportunity to take part in belly dancing, learn flamenco and aim for a prize in the costume contest. Treat yourself to something from one of the vendor stalls – wouldn’t you like to purchase a handcrafted shield? The proceeds from the event go to a local homeless charity as well as educational programs. For more information visit the official website.
The Pecos Studio Tour
The Pecos Studio Tour is an annual event that celebrates the best independent artists that the region has to offer. These are based in Pecos village just 20 minutes from Santa Fe. This is a small community and the artists that are based here work with all media. There is usually a preview event where you can get an idea of what is on offer and decide which artists’ studios you want to visit. This year’s event is set to take place on 27th and 28th September, from 10 am to 5 pm. Details on the event are gradually being released on their official website.
